Emily Smith

Emily qualified as a registered nurse in 2006 and began nursing in Critical Care.  Here Emily developed the knowledge and skills to deliver multiple complex intravenous therapies, manage vascular access devices and found an interest in vascular access.  Emily completed her post graduate nursing degree during this time and built the foundations of device care and maintenance and the key aspects in preventing complications. 

Emily then moved into a nurse-led vascular access team and began to place ultrasound-guided peripheral midlines and PICCs using ECG and chest x-ray.  In 2017, she moved to her current role leading the IV Team at Aintree University Hospital, now part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  Emily has had many opportunities including completing an Msc in Advanced Clinical Practice at the University of Liverpool and presenting a WoCoVA in 2022.   This role has enabled her to improve practice within the organisation, including standardisation of practice and guidance, developing advanced practice within vascular access and evaluation new products and techniques.  Emily works with an innovative team, who won a Nursing Times Award in 2021 and received another nomination in 2022 for implementation of Ultrasound-guided cannulation.  Emily is passionate about supporting education for patients and healthcare professionals, driving innovation, implementing evidenced-based practice and sharing practice in the vascular access community through publication.
